PhD Thesis : Understanding of infrared heating for thermofoming of semi-crystalline thermoplastics

Abstract — Infrared (IR) heating is widely used for thermoforming of thermoplastic polymers. The key benefit of radiation heating is that a significant amount of the radiative energy penetrates into the polymers thanks to their semi-transparency. Thermoforming process typically involves heating and forming stages where preforms are heated prior to the forming in order to enhance their formability. Radiation heat transfer models are therefore critical for process optimizations. For the case of heating unfilled semi-crystalline polymers, the interaction between their microcrystalline structure and optical properties is the key to develop successful predictive models.

Résumé — Dans le procédé de thermoformage, le chauffage infrarouge (IR) est le mode le plus utilisé pour conditionner les préformes avant formage. Le principal avantage du chauffage radiatif est qu'il permet de chauffer les polymères à coeur du fait de leur semi-transparence. La modélisation du transfert radiatif est donc un élément critique en vue de l'optimisation du procédé. Dans le cas des polymères semi-cristallins, la structure cristalline affecte les propriétés optiques. Cette étude vise à améliorer la compréhension de l'interaction entre la structure cristalline et les propriétés optiques afin de proposer un modèle prédictif de chauffage de préformes.
