The understanding and modelling of their behaviour and their response following medium velocity impacts is of great interest for the various industries using these materials. This paper deals with the theoretical and experimental study of the impact of a spherical indenter at velocities ranging from 100 to 300 m/s on composite laminated plates. The relevant energy transfers that take place during the impact are identified. A 3D-model is developped in the frame of non-equilibrium thermodynamics. Comparisons between measured and predicted value of indenter velocity, plate deformations and delaminated area are discussed.
