Abstract:
Electromechanical actuators (EMAs) are increasingly becoming attractive in the more electric aircraft field because of their outstanding benefits of aircraft fuel reduction, maintenance cost saving, and system flexibility improvement. Mechanical power transmission (MPT) is critical for the safe application of aerospace EMAs and causes problems, such as inertia to load, heat generated by energy losses, and faults caused by jamming and freeplay. Based on system engineering and simulation-aided design, this paper proposes an incremental approach for designing the virtual prototype of MPT applied to EMAs. Resorting to the bond-graph formalism, the parasitic effects are progressively introduced and the realism of the models is gradually increased. Finally, the numerical implementations are presented and compared with the basic, advanced, and behavioral MPT models in a causal simulation environment of AMESim. Multi-level submodels are available and can be reused for preliminary sizing, thermal balance verification, and response to fault analysis. This incremental design method provides engineers with efficient virtual means to access and increase the performance as well as increase the maturity and robustness.
